There is overlap is cast and crew from Smokin' Aces and Paul, which can be the only reason a nerdy, bespectacled, judo-outfit-wearing young boy is given such a prominent role. He could have been totally cut from the movie...totally. So his parents are either influential or the in-gag referencing Smokin' Aces was considered hilarious enough to warrant his inclusion. It wasn't.
